Meet Drew Tienken ’22, an OUR Peer Research Ambassador (PRA) double majoring in Environmental Science and Political Science.
What is the focus of your research?
The focus of my research is how to prevent the degradation of coastal wetlands against accelerated sea level rise associated with climate change! Salt marshes and other tidal wetlands are at risk of drowning, and I study how to mitigate the effects of high water levels while maximizing many of the important ecosystem services salt marshes provide.
Why did you get involved in research?
I got involved in research because I found myself wanting to know more, and constantly asking deeper questions in class about environmental systems I was interested in. For me, research is a way to explore the world around me and learn more about the environmental mechanisms that drive the functions of the planet.
What advice would you give to aspiring student researchers?
Don’t be scared of talking to professors! Faculty members are in their jobs for a reason; they love conducting their research and interacting with students. Taking the time to simply talk about research they partake in means a lot to them, and they wouldn’t have pursued a career path of research if they felt differently. Don’t be afraid to take risks and reach out to them! It’s 3 minutes of sending an intimidating email for 3 years of an incredible research experience.
What do you enjoy the most about participating in research?
I love the freedom of it! Research is all about what you put into it. If you have a busy schedule, you can work with your research advisor to work less hours, yet still learn a lot. If you are looking to start your own project, you can put in more work and gain an invaluable research experience. The time commitment and schedules of research are unique to everyone, and I have always enjoyed the freedom that comes along with it of tailoring your research experience to your personal and academic life.
Describe the impact your research experiences have had on you.
Research has given me various translatable skills that I intend to use throughout my career. I have become a better public speaker, a better critical thinker, and can confidently write academic papers. It has prepared me for the future in ways that I could never have imagined, despite what career path I decide to choose. For those wanting a developmental experience for their career, I highly recommend research as a way to catalyze your growth into a professional academic.
