SHARE Summer 2024: Research Opportunity with Dr. Nathaniel Rickles

Project Mentor

Dr. Nathaniel Rickles
Department: Pharmacy

Research Project Overview:

A SHARE apprentice can help advance a project currently underway and another project that will hopefully receive IRB approval this spring.

The SHARE apprentice can assist with calling participants to see if they are interested in participating in a survey to understand psychological factors related to medication adherence.

The SHARE apprentice could also explore a literature review and analysis of data related to mental health symptoms in college students and their risk for poor academic performance.

Role of a SHARE Summer Apprentice:

A SHARE apprentice can help advance a project currently underway and another project that will hopefully receive IRB approval this spring. The SHARE apprentice will learn about applied research, how to collect and maintain data using best practices, how to analyze collected data, and report on such data. The apprentice will also learn about social theory and its impact on clinical outcomes, and how to develop research questions and testable hypotheses. The apprentice will also learn how to prepare and understand the components of an IRB and/or grant proposal.

The SHARE apprentice will complete CITI training as needed for IRB-approved research. The apprentice will also have 1:1 supervisory meetings with the faculty mentor 1-2 times each week.

Summer Schedule/Time Commitment:

The apprentice’s work schedule can be flexible and can involve 5-10 hours a week (can do more if schedule allows). There are no specific days. If making calls to participants, it is recommended that the apprentice pick different days and times to make calls to increase the chance of successfully reaching a prospective participant.

If the apprentice works on the college mental health project, those hours are also flexible and can be fixed during certain days and times. There is flexibility when the work begins, but early summer would be ideal and continue throughout the summer period. The meetings can be arranged at the apprentice’s convenience. Probably 1-2 virtual meetings per week.

Preferred Qualifications:

There are no specific requirements. The statistical analysis if it occurs during the rotation will be basic and largely be done by a computer program. It is helpful if the apprentice has an interest in the medical field and/or mental health. Good organizational skills and being highly motivated to work independently are also preferred qualifications.

To Apply:

The application deadline has passed.

Please note:
All students hired for a SHARE Summer apprenticeship must complete a federal I-9 form and present original documents in person to OUR staff as part of the hiring process. Visit this U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services page for more information about acceptable documents. You cannot begin working until this is complete. Students are encouraged to plan ahead for this. For example, if you are going home for spring break, consider bringing documents back to campus with you.
