SHARE Summer 2023: Research Opportunity with Dr. Ariana Codr

Project Mentor

Dr. Ariana Codr
Department: Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Research Project Overview:

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) wants its majors and minors to be in control of the best, most up-to-date information on how to turn their passion for WGSS into a fulfilling career after graduation. To this end, Dr. Ariana Codr, the Associate Director of WGSS, is researching career options for students with WGSS degrees, job placements for UConn students, current trends in hiring, optimal double majors for WGSS students, strategies for talking about WGSS in job applications and interviews, and other career focused topics that would be of interest to our students. This project will culminate in a handbook for WGSS majors and minors as well as materials for a learning module to be incorporated into WGSS 2250: Critical Approaches to WGSS taught by Dr. Codr.

Role of a SHARE Summer Apprentice:

Responsibilities may include researching career placements for Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, corresponding with professionals in a variety of fields with WGSS degrees, reaching out to alumni about career experiences and current positions, identifying and compiling resources for WGSS job searchers, and collaborating on composing our career handbook. The shape of the apprenticeship may evolve over the course of the summer as the research apprentice discovers promising leads and areas of interest.

The research apprentice will hone skills in education research with a special focus on humanities, social science, and interdisciplinary programs. The student will learn about career options for recent college graduates as well as valuable insight into how to prepare for and land a job in a WGSS related field. WGSS minors and majors are most likely to benefit. The research apprentice will also gain introductory experience in higher education administration and curricular development.

Summer Schedule/Time Commitment:

Total time commitment over the summer is 92 hours. I am flexible and will determine a schedule in consultation with the apprentice.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will either be a major or minor in WGSS OR considering a major/minor in the program. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, especially via email. Experience working with Microsoft and Google Suites (including spreadsheets) is a plus.
