Peer Research Ambassador Naomi Benningfield

OUR Peer Research Ambassador Naomi Benningfield '25, Major: Molecular & Cell Biology.

Naomi (she/her) is a senior majoring in Molecular & Cell Biology with an Associates in Early Childhood Education. She is currently a pre-medical student, a residential assistant, a co-director of the BIOL 1107 Tutoring Program, and has worked as a First Year Experience mentor.

On campus, Naomi works within the Molecular Archaeology Lab directed by Dr. Hartman. The lab mainly focuses on a range of studies analyzing the stable isotopes preserved within archaeological remains. Naomi works on assisting the paleoclimate reconstruction project from herbivore teeth collected from Nesher Ramla, Israel dated to 120-100kya. This fall she will be addressing the equid eco-physiological response to the last glacial climate change.

During the summer of 2023, Naomi worked as a research intern for the Integrated Anesthesia Association at Hartford Hospital. She was exposed to a variety of studies and methodologies such as pain management, health equity, retrospective studies, and case reports. Here she worked under Dr. Walker, the Director of Clinical Research and Dr. Finkel, the Medical Director of Research.

Outside of school, Naomi volunteers at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, where she co-leads a college volunteer group geared towards assisting students with their professional development. Naomi assists in organizing events such as a tour of (CESI) the Center for Education, Simulation, and Innovation and guest speakers such as anesthesiologist Dr. Kong from her time at Hartford Hospital. Naomi also volunteers as an emergency patient aide at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and is especially fond of her time working in Hospice Care. During her weekends, Naomi works as a lab technician in Phoenix Environmental Laboratories where she assesses the quality of drinking water and tests for fluridone in samples.

Naomi is from Okinawa, Japan and has lived in a variety of places such as South Korea due to her father serving in the Air Force. She loves traveling and often visits her family in Miyakojima. During her free time, she spends her time outdoors by hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, and fishing. Naomi hopes to use her unique experiences to inspire individuals to explore novel research opportunities.
