HRP SU24-21: Research Opportunity with Dr. Peter Maye

Project Mentor

Dr. Peter Maye
Center for Regenerative Medicine

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description The project area focuses on developing computational approaches to aid in the analysis of microscope images. Open-source Matlab and Python applications will be used to analyze microscope images. The testing of applications by outside groups to determine their utility and accuracy to work on the images generated by our research group. The ultimate goal is to develop automated image analysis workflows that contain alerts and notification systems in place.
Project Direction The project area supports broader ongoing research in the skeletal sciences. Microscope images are generated during the skeletal phenotyping of mutant mouse bone tissue. Alternatively, images are also generated by performing spatial transcriptomics on human articular cartilage samples. The analyses of images will contribute to understanding the function of genes and cells present in skeletal tissues.
Mentorship and Supervision The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Maye and technical staff in the lab. Initially, we will assess the student’s capabilities and interests. From that point, Dr. Maye will develop a training plan to help the student learn fundamental computational approaches related to image analysis and project components to contribute to the lab’s research goals. His/Her progress will be assessed by their willingness and ability to learn and develop applications and assist in image analysis efforts. Weekly lab meetings with the student will provide feedback on their progress.
Student Qualifications The interested student should have an interest in computer image analysis, and have a basic skill set of understanding Python and the use of libraries to develop computational workflows.
Summer Schedule Options A typical work week with be 9 am-5 pm Monday-Friday.
Project Continuation Fall 2024, Spring 2025
Academic Year Time Commitment 3 hours/week
