Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description
Project Description | We are developing a robotic bioprinter that can directly bioprint scaffolds within a patient’s body. As part of this effort, the candidate will work with our team to integrate the robot with a moving system that allows it to travel across the patient bed to cover different patient body parts. The system will be programmed and the quality of bioprinting will be tested in vitro. |
Project Direction | The project involves developing a robotic bioprinter that can directly bioprint scaffolds within a patient’s body. In the long term, the automation of bioprinter should be improved and its ability to seamlessly reconstruct defects should be tested. Eventually, the system can be used for the treatment of different musculoskeletal injuries. |
Mentorship and Supervision | The student will work in a team and will be mentored by a postdoc and a senior PhD candidate. In addition to group meetings, there will be weekly one-on-one meetings to discuss the progress and challenges. |
Student Qualifications | Interest in tissue engineering, robotic systems, and bioprinting is desired. |
Summer Schedule Options | Research Dates: May 22 to July 28, 2023 Schedule: Schedule is flexible and can be individually discussed. |
Project Continuation | Fall 2023, Spring 2024 |
Academic Year Time Commitment | 6 hours/week |
Possible Thesis Project | Yes |
