Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description
Project Description | Medication Reconciliation is a complex process requiring access to information from a variety of Electronic Health Records, a patients or caregivers knowledge of what is being given in a home or what is administered in a hospital or skilled nursing facility. We seek students with skills and knowledge in user-centered design, pharmacy, nursing and Computer Science to assist in further development of prototypes to collect, analyze and share medication data to optimize care outcomes. This project will involve qualitative and quantitative research on design options and continued modification and development of user-facing mobile health tools. |
Project Direction | A multidisciplinary group of researchers at the Health Center, the school of Engineering (Computer Science and Engineering), the school of pharmacy and Yale school of Medicine have been evaluating the development requirements of patient and physician facing solutions that combine data from a variety of different data sources. The group has been part of a larger state-level initiative on creating the Best Possible Medication History. This summer research builds on prior user-centered design projects to focus on how a patient might wish to see and interact with their medication data from the CT state Health Information Exchange (Conniect.org) |
Mentorship and Supervision | The student will receive training in the basics of Medication Reconciliation by review of materials produced by prior students, holding weekly team meetings and dedicated student meetings at least once weekly. In addition there will be faculty oversight by Family Medicine (Clinical Informatics) faculty, CSE faculty and Pharmacy faculty for this project. There are research and administrative staff associated with our program who will also work directly with students and provide them with oversight, feedback and assistance on their work. |
Student Qualifications | Interested students should be entering their junior or senior years in CSE, Pharmacy and or Nursing. CSE students should have a basic knowledge of programming (with experience in Flutter and FIGMA considered a plus) Pharmacy and Nursing students should have experience working with patients and senior clinicians on medication reconciliation. Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods is considered a plus. |
Summer Schedule Options | Research Dates: May 23 to July 29, 2022 Schedule: M-F, 8am-5pm (Occasional early evening hours may be required) |
Project Continuation | Fall 2022, Spring 2023 |
Academic Year Time Commitment | 6 hours/week |
Possible Thesis Project | Yes |
