Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description Rapid detection of pathogens plays a critical role in diagnostics of infectious diseases (e.g., COVID-19) (Ding, X. et al., Nature Communications, 2020, 11, 4711). In this summer project, we will develop microfluidics technology for DNA detection. The microfluidic device will be fabricated by using 3D printing technology. Project Direction This summer research will focus on developing microfluidics technology and novel DNA detection method. On the one hand, we can develop simple nucleic acid testing method for disease diagnostics. One the other hand, we can design and fabricate a portable microfluidic system for point of care diagnostics of infectious diseases.
Mentorship and Supervision The summer students will first work with me and our lab members (e.g., postdoc researchers, PhD students) to learn how to develop microfluidic device and DNA testing technology. When they are familiar with these technologies, they will be encouraged to independently design and fabricate their microfluidic device by 3D printing technology. Then, my lab members will assist them to test their developed device. The summer students will be invited to join our weekly lab meeting to discuss their experimental progress. Students are expected to analyze the experimental data and present their findings.
Student Qualifications Previous experience in microfluidics technology is not required, but the demonstrated experience in one of the following fields (e.g., mechanical design (e.g., Solidworks), 3D printing, molecular biology, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), CRISPR technology and analytical chemistry) is desired.
