Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description I conduct research studies on behavioral interventions for promoting health outcomes, particularly related to addictive behaviors. I currently have three ongoing clinical trials testing: 1) a family-based therapy for Internet gaming disorder (aka Video Game Addiction); 2) a counseling intervention for young adults with substance use disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder and 3) a reinforcement intervention to promote HIV testing among at-risk women. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in one or more of these projects based on their interests. Student involvement can include: data entry and database management, assisting with ongoing trainings for our community partners (for the HIV study), assisting with advertising and recruitment of participants, participation in research team meetings, and use of existing databases to develop and answer research questions in the field of addictions. Direct contact with research participants may be available based on interest and student skill level.
Project Direction These three studies will be ongoing through next Fall and students are welcomed to continue their work during the fall semester. Students who continue into the Fall may have additional opportunity to build on the skills they learn over the summer (e.g., more advanced data analysis, more contact with research participants).
Mentorship and Supervision I will schedule a weekly mentorship meeting with the research assistant. Weekly tasks will be specific and measurable. Informal feedback will be given after the completion of each task, with opportunities for more formal feedback during the weekly meetings.
Student Qualifications No specific skills are required. However, an interest in psychology research, clinical trials, behavioral interventions, and addictions is desirable.
Summer Schedule Options Research Dates: May 28 to August 2, 2019
Schedule: M-F, 9am-4pm or 9am-5pm
Project Continuation Fall 2019, Spring 2020
Academic Year Time Commitment 3-9 hours/week
