Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description	My lab is trying to find novel interventions to slow down the aging process, and alleviate a number of diseases as a group. My recent work has shown several drugs can extend lifespan and maintain physical function in aged mice. The project here is to find new drugs for delaying aging using primary human cells and mice. Student(s) will gain extensive experience on cell culture, mouse studies, and overall aging research.
Project Direction	This summer project will mainly focus on in vitro models, such as human cells. We plan to select several drug candidates for testing in vivo (mice) in the academic year. Authorship will be offered if student makes scientific contribution resulting in publication.
Mentorship and Supervision	As the PI, I will have weekly meetings with the student for project discussion, troubleshooting and progress monitoring. Also, the student will always be able to find me in my office for any additional questions or concerns. The student will have an opportunity (and is highly recommended) to give a presentation about the summer project at the Center on Aging lab meeting (~20 attendees). My lab has two postdocs and a senior technician, who will train and work with the student on daily basis.
Student Qualifications	We prefer students who are interested in aging research, enthusiastic to learn, have a basic knowledge of biology, and are willing to work with mice. Also, one of my major goals for running my lab is to establish a family-like environment in the lab. So, students with a pleasant personality will be preferred.
