Project Mentor

Dr. Reinhard Laubenbacher
Center for Quantitative Medicine

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description The Center for Quantitative Medicine at UConn Health is developing a software platform for computational algorithms related to medicine and healthcare. The platform is based on the relatively new technology of Docker software containers, which can be used to share environment-independent computational, mathematical, and statistical tools. The site algorun.org contains more information. Qualified undergraduate students will participate in the further development of this platform, learn novel software engineering techniques, become proficient in Docker applications, and participate in providing software solutions to problems in the health field.
Project Direction Students will work as part of a team of researchers, software developers, and mathematicians. Tasks will include the development of novel software tools, as well as packaging of existing algorithms in containers and the creation of software workflows. The project director is Dr. Reinhard Laubenbacher, in collaboration with other faculty at the Center for Quantitative Medicine.
Mentorship and Supervision Overall supervision and mentoring by Dr. Laubenbacher. Day-to-day mentoring and supervision by the lead software engineer, Mr. I. Hosny. Weekly project team meetings. Ongoing feedback as part of individual or group meetings.

  • – Pursuing a computer science degree
  • – Proficient in at least one of the following programming languages (Python, Ruby, Java, C++)
  • – Familiar with web development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • – Familiar with shell scripting
  • – Know what Docker technology is (not necessarily proficient)
  • – Have a basic understanding of software engineering methodologies
  • – Have a data-oriented mindset
  • – Interested in the role of technology solving health-related problems (genetics, health care systems, etc.)

Minimum GPA: 3.7. Minimum Science GPA: 3.7.
