Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description
Project Description | In this project, the student will participate in developing an iOS app for tracking patient reported outcomes such as health related habits, heart failure symptoms, and quality of life in a patients with a diagnosis of heart failure. The nature of this project requires 1) to understand the importance of daily monitoring of biomarkers, activity levels, symptoms, and medication response for the patient struggling to manage chronic heart failure, 2) to implement the mobile application to support heart failure management strategies, and 3) to evaluate patient reported outcomes with mobile app. The student will be asked to develop the iOS app using X-Code software, and to analyze the collected data using statistical methodology. |
Project Direction | Heart failure requires daily monitoring of many health parameter to enable management success and avoid decompensation and hospitalizations. To meet the growing needs for health monitoring out of the clinics, the mobile application is developed and utilized to the heart failure patients. Throughout the academic year, the student will have opportunity to analyze the collected reported outcomes of heart failure patients from the developed mobile applications and to evaluate the impact of mobile applications to the improvements in heart failure health outcomes. |
Mentorship and Supervision | I will share the plan of research and discuss the progress with the student on a daily basis during the summer time. For the first few weeks, students will have time to understand the research and learn the researchkit and carekit frameworks, which will be used in the mobile applications. Then, the student will focus on developing the mobile applications. During the academic year, the student will meet me to discuss the progress on a weekly basis. |
Student Qualifications | The following qualifications are recommended:
Minimum GPA: 3.0. Minimum Science GPA: 3.0. |
Summer Schedule Options | Research Dates: 9-10 full-time weeks to be scheduled between May 7 and August 24, 2018 Schedule: M-F, 9am-4pm |
