Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description
Project Description | This summer project is designed to conduct additional experiments for publication of a manuscript entitled “Microbiota and sickle cell bone disease in mice.” Under the supervision of the PI, the student will design primers for quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), perform qPCR analysis for gene expression, genotyping, histology sectioning and staining, and draft a manuscript. The student could be listed as first author or co-author of the manuscript contingent on satisfactory progress. |
Project Direction | During the summer, the student will complete experiments in PI’s laboratory. During the academic year, the student will focus on drafting the manuscript and conduct additional experiments when needed. The manuscript is planned to be submitted to the “Journal of Clinical Investigation.” |
Mentorship and Supervision | The PI will teach the student to conduct experiments on a hands-on approach for the first or second times. Then students are expect to conduct experiments with minor supervision. |
Student Qualifications | The students who are interested in getting into a medical school or a PhD program are qualified. |
Summer Schedule Options | Research Dates: 9-10 full-time weeks to be scheduled between May 7 and August 24, 2018 Schedule: M-F, 9am-5pm |
Project Continuation | Fall 2018. Will continue for Spring 2019 only if there is a need. |
Academic Year Time Commitment | 9 hours/week |
