Project Mentor

Dr. Jennifer Garza
Department of Medicine

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description We are seeking students interested in an opportunity to work on a project related to physical activity among working pregnant women. During the summer semester, the student will primarily be responsible for data analysis of existing physical activity data and literature review. There may also be opportunities to work directly with participants on field data collection.
Project Direction This experience will be part of a larger study currently being developed by Dr. Garza (me). I have some preliminary support during the next two years to develop a larger grant application on directly-measured occupational activity and its effects on maternal and fetal health outcomes. It will be helpful for me to have a student partner on the activities that will help with my grant development, including literature reviewing and data analysis.
Mentorship and Supervision I meet with all students on a weekly basis at a regularly scheduled time. My students are expected to prepare an agenda, which we both review ahead of the meeting. The agenda includes checking in on ongoing assignments/projects and planning for future assignments/projects. I review assignments/projects as they are completed by the students and provide ongoing feedback. We also complete the mid-summer review together.
Student Qualifications Students with data analysis experience in MATLAB, SAS, Excel, or another similar program would be preferred.
