Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description	We study how the brain develops and how abnormal development contributes to brain disorders. We are currently using a number of approaches, including single-cell RNA sequencing, bioinformatics, molecular biology, and experiments in stem cells or animal models (mouse and chick), to study the generation of various brain cells.
Project Direction	Our multidisciplinary study will provide a student with an opportunity to explore different research approaches and identify a project that aligns with the individual’s career goals and interests. One of the goals of the summary research is to help student identify a potential long-term project leading to publication.
Mentorship and Supervision	I will discuss with the student to develop a training plan consistent with student’s career goals. Students are mentored on a day to day basis by me or a research associate in the lab. In weekly lab meetings, research progress and feedback will be discussed. Students are encouraged to participate in seminars, symposia and workshops in the departments and UCHC campus.
Student Qualifications	I look for students with self-motivation and maturity. The student should have an academic interest in life sciences and/or bioinformatics, preferably a long-term research program beyond the summer.
Summer Schedule Options	Research Dates: 9-10 full-time weeks to be scheduled between May 7 and August 24, 2018 Schedule: To be determined in consultation with selected student
