Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description We are accepting highly motivated undergraduate students to join the lab to enrich their research experience in the area of immunology/hematopoiesis/ obesity/stem cells. Our research projects incorporate epigenetic and genomic approaches to understand the crosswalks between immune compartment and host tissue cells under chronic stress conditions, such as obesity.
Project Direction We are accepting highly motivated undergraduate students to join the lab to enrich their research experience in the area of immunology/hematopoiesis/ obesity/stem cells. Our research projects incorporate epigenetic and genomic approaches to understand the crosswalks between immune compartment and host tissue cells under chronic stress conditions, such as obesity.
Mentorship and Supervision I have worked with more than ten undergraduate students from freshman, sophomore, or junior years in research for over five years as a faculty member. I believe to start students’ research training in the laboratory is an effective venue for not only strengthening their classroom learning but also preparing for their future scientific career development. Several of my previous students have later been accepted to national undergraduate student research programs and NIH post-bac scholar program, presented at national/international conferences and co-authored research articles. Students will work closely with postdoc or graduate student members in the lab and have weekly discussion with me in additional to anytime experimental discussion as needed. Students are also expected to present their progress in our bi-weekly lab meeting, encouraged for grant application and abstract submission to national/international conferences.
Student Qualifications Highly motivated students who have completed their general biology courses and basic laboratory skills (such as cell culture, RNA extraction, agrose gel analysis, microscope analysis) are encouraged to apply. More questions in regarding the specific aspects of project can be directed to Dr. Zhou at bzhou@uchc.edu.
Academic Year Time Commitment 6-9 hours/week
Schedule Options We expect students to participate the project actively to maximize in-depth understanding the research training procedures. Thus either a schedule with 12pm-4pm or 9am-4pm would be preferred.
