Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description
Project Description | Stem cell research is considered one of the most promising fields of medicine. I am engaged in a research project identifying the challenges of translating pluripotent stem cell research into therapies. The initial work on the project is to track the role of the four state funding programs that have provided much of the basic stem cell research funding in order to evaluate their priorities and the types of grants they have made. I am also evaluating the first-in-human stage one clinical trials with prospective pluripotent stem cell based therapies and whether they have conformed with the guidelines developed by the International Society for Stem Cell Research. |
Project Direction | The work in the spring semester will focus initially on the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s (CIRM) funding program. CIRM is the single largest funder of stem cell research in the U.S. thanks to the decision of voters in California to make $3 billion available for this purpose. If time permits, the New York State program will be the second focus. |
Student Qualifications | It would be helpful to have some background in biology, but it is not essential, and an interest in science policy. Minimum GPA: 3.5. |
Time Commitment | 3-9 hours/week |
Schedule Options | I am flexible as to the number of hours per week and the schedule. Much of the work can be done off site. |
Project Continuation | Summer 2017 and/or Fall 2017 |
Possible Thesis Project | Yes (non-laboratory thesis) |
