• Upcoming Application Deadlines for Summer Research Experiences

Early December marks the time when you should be thinking about….Summer! Many research programs have their application deadlines in January and February. If you wait until Spring Break to start looking, you will miss some of the most exciting opportunities.

Many summer programs use the acronym “REU” or Research Opportunity for Undergraduates. REUs typically offer a summer stipend of $4000 to $5000, as well as housing for the summer! Other Summer positions can have a variety of different names–Fellowships, Internships, and Co-ops. Don’t worry about what it’s called–just get the experience!

Department of Homeland Security – STEM Summer Internship Program
Deadline: January 6, 2014; http://www.orau.gov/dhseducation/internships/

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. Undergraduate students receive a $5,000 stipend plus travel expenses for a 10-week research experience.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)
Deadline: 5:00pm, January 10, 2014; http://science.energy.gov/wdts/suli/

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns at one of 15 participating DOE laboratories.

Summer ORISE Fellowship Opportunities at the CDC
Deadline: January 17, 2014; http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/dls/orise.html

Appointments through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellowship Program. This is a paid research opportunity for biology and chemistry majors.

Amgen Scholars Program
Deadline: February 3, 2014; http://www.amgenscholars.com/

The Amgen Scholars Program provides undergraduates with faculty-mentored summer research opportunities in science and engineering fields at 10 host universities in the United States.

Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies – Summer REU Program
Deadline: February 5, 2014; http://www.caryinstitute.org/students/reu-program

Cary Institute’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program provides the opportunity for 8-12 students each summer to conduct quality research in ecology. Selected students receive a $6000 stipend, a $600 food allowance and housing in an Institute dormitory.

Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP)

The NIBIB sponsored Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship (BESIP) is for undergraduate biomedical engineering students who have completed their junior year of college. The internship will allow students to participate in cutting edge biomedical research projects under the mentorship of world-class scientists in NIH laboratories in Bethesda, MD. Stipend of approximately $6600 for 10 weeks. Applications open on Dec. 1, 2013.

Don’t wait to check out summer research opportunities. Many research programs and internships want to finalize their candidates early in the spring. Look for the acronym “REU” or Research Opportunity for Undergraduates when searching for possible summer opportunities. Some offer awards of $4000 to $5000, and free room and board for the summer!
Remember – summer positions can have a variety of different names – “fellowship,” “internship,” “co-op,” or “associate.” Keep your options open in order to find the best experience for you!

March 1 Deadlines:

Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program (MAOP) Undergraduate Summer Research Internship – Virginia Tech – Wide variety of academic disciplines; $3000 stipend, free room and board.
Summer Research Internships: University of Tokyo – Six-week research-centered program for students interested in natural science areas. Housing provided; stipend to cover some travel costs and personal expenses.
Center on Budget and Policy – Washington, DC – Offers internships working on a variety of public policy issues.
Research Fellowships in Oceanography – University of Rhode Island – Primarily for rising seniors in science, math and engineering programs.
Science News Writing Internship/Science Magazine –Internship for news writers; applications being accepted for 6-month period (July-Dec.)
Whale Research Internships – Gloucester, MA – Biology/Zoology students – summer internship on commercial whale watch vessels collecting, organizing and analyzing data.
Maryland Sea Grant Program – REU – Opportunity to conduct marine research on Chesapeake Bay. Priority given to rising seniors
Washington Internship on Social Insurance – Targets upper division students studying public policy, economics, political science or related field; 12 week internship with $3500 stipend
National Institutes of Health – Internship in Biomedical Research – Work side by side with researchers in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) – Intended for advanced undergraduates studying the history of electrical technology and computing

March 5 Deadline:

Hertog Global Strategy Initiative (HGSI) at Columbia University-2013 Seminar – Topic “The History of Climate Change and the Future of Global Governance”. Limited financial is available to cover tuition costs.

March 8 Deadline:

Nanotechnology for Health, Energy and the Environment – REU program at the University of Stony Brook. $4000 stipend plus free housing and a meal plan
Donald A. King HDSA Summer Research Fellowship (Huntington’s Disease Society of America)

March 15 Deadlines:

University of Buffalo – School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences – Competitive 10-week program with a $3000 stipend.
AGI/AIPG Summer Internships in Geoscience Policy – 12-week internship; fixed stipend of $5,000.
Internships with the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States – Designed to provide practical experience in an environment that mixes academic study with public policy. Internships are part-time (15-20 hours per week) and are unpaid.
Biology Summer Internship Program, Long Island University – $3,000 student stipend and financial support for on-campus housing.

March 22 Deadline:

Behavior Sciences Student Fellowship – Epilepsy Foundation of America – Award amount up to $3,000.

Intersession and early in the spring semester is the perfect time to make your plans for next summer. Many research programs and other relevant opportunities set deadlines in January and February. The people who run summer programs want to make sure that they have time to choose their candidates and then give everyone time to plan the practicalities.

So … now is the time to get your applications ready!

Feb. 1 deadline:

UConn Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF) Award – awards of up to $4,000 for UConn students with strong research and creative project plans for the summer! Over 60 awards made in 2012!
Amgen-UROP Scholars Program, MIT – faculty-mentored summer research in science and biotechnology. (There are lots of Amgen Scholar Programs.)
Langley Aerospace Research Student Scholar Program, 10-week summer session.
REU Program in Solar and Space Physics, University of Colorado, Boulder.
Smithsonian Institution summer internships – opportunities in education programs, a digital arts camp for teens with cognitive and intellectual disabilities, marketing and evaluation.

AP-Google Scholarship – $20,000 scholarship award, open to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors interested in digital journalism.

Feb. 9 deadline:

Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD.

Feb. 11 deadline:

American Heart Association, Founders Affiliate Undergraduate Student Summer Fellowship Program, based in affiliate labs (including at UCHC) in NY, CT, and MA.
Tibor T. Polgar Fellowship Program, NY Department of Environmental Conservation. Research on the Hudson River.

Feb. 13 deadline:

Hartford Hospital Summer Student Pre-Med & Research Program – an especially good opportunity for junior pre-med students. Award for the ten-week Program is $1,500 – $1,800.

Feb. 15 deadline:

Biomedical research, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program.
American Bar Association, Summer Research Diversity Fellowships in Law and Social Science for Undergraduate Students. Four fellowships, based in Chicago.
Nantucket Maria Mitchell Observatory REU for astronomy and astrophysics students.
