SHARE Summer 2024: Research Opportunity with Prof. Vincent Tycer

Project Mentor

Professor Vincent Tycer
Department: Dramatic Arts

Research Project Overview:

The project is an educational animated pilot for kids 9-12 years old supporting STEM education. It is being funded by $50K from the UConn Innovations in Quantum STEM Education Award and will include an animated short film along with support materials for the development of an animated series. The project is currently titled “Quinn and the Quantum Team.” Collaborating faculty are from Dramatic Arts, Digital Media and Design, Computer Science, Physics and Business Administration.

Role of a SHARE Summer Apprentice:

Animation Focused Concept Art – We are looking for two or more student artists who will be asked to contribute to different stages of the artistic process of developing a pilot TV episode.

There are three different stages of the prospective work. An artist can contribute to one or more sections of the anticipated work depending on their experience, interest and when they have availability.
• Concept Art derived from a study of animated television series for kids, that supports the story of the animated project.
• Storyboard Art that supports the script, story, and style of the pilot. The storyboard will be used to guide animation.
• Character, Equipment & Location Drawings with multiple variations. This will be used in surveys to determine potential post pilot changes to the aesthetics.

Digital Art and Hand-drawn Art are both options for collaboration.

Summer Schedule/Time Commitment:

The schedule will be very flexible. The student can expect to work for the majority of time asynchronously.

As there are 3 different aspects of the Artwork needed, there are three different time frames that we will be looking to get work done.

  • Concept Art will have a target completion date of August 1st.
  • Storyboarding will have a target completion date of July 15th.
  • Character, Equipment & Location Drawings (with variations) can be worked on throughout the summer.

Preferred Qualifications:

We are looking for artists with a passion for animation.

The application deadline has passed.

Please note:
All students hired for a SHARE Summer apprenticeship must complete a federal I-9 form and present original documents in person to OUR staff as part of the hiring process. Visit this U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services page for more information about acceptable documents. You cannot begin working until this is complete. Students are encouraged to plan ahead for this. For example, if you are going home for spring break, consider bringing documents back to campus with you.
