Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description This summer research opportunity focuses on investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying chronic kidney disease (CKD), specifically the role of macrophages in inflammation and fibrosis. The project will involve studying the activation and polarization of macrophages and their impact on kidney tissue damage, with an emphasis on the PU.1 transcription factor and the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. Students will gain hands-on experience in cell culture, gene expression analysis, cell differentiation, PCR, real time RT-PCR, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and histology to uncover key regulatory pathways. This research aims to identify novel therapeutic targets for CKD, providing students with valuable insights into biomedical research and translational science.
Project Direction The summer project contributes to a broader research effort aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms driving inflammation and fibrosis in chronic kidney disease (CKD). This work is part of an ongoing investigation into macrophage-mediated kidney damage, focusing on the role of the PU.1-NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. Insights gained from this project will guide further studies during the academic year to develop targeted therapeutic strategies for CKD.
Mentorship and Supervision I will provide hands-on training and gradually increase the research assistant’s responsibilities. Their progress will be monitored through weekly check-ins to discuss results and challenges. I will offer feedback during these meetings and remain available for ongoing support as needed.
Student Qualifications Students should have a basic understanding of biology and an interest in kidney disease research. We welcome hardworking and motivated individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to the project.
Summer Schedule Options Research Dates: May 19 to July 25, 2025
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with flexibility to adjust based on individual preferences.
Project Continuation Fall 2025, Spring 2026
Academic Year Time Commitment 3, 6, or 9 hours/week
