Peer Research Ambassador Ayushi Patel '23.

Ayushi (she/her) is a senior majoring in Molecular & Cell Biology and minoring in English on the pre-medical track.

On campus, she is involved in PERIOD and serves as both Vice President and Secretary, as well as Huskies for Refugees, UNICEF at UConn, and UConn Health Leaders. Ayushi is involved in Community Outreach, serving as Program Director for the Holy Family Shelter volunteer program. She is also a Resident Assistant serving the freshmen honors community and student mentor for Biology 1107.

Ayushi began her research experience on campus by working as a research assistant in Dr. Kent Holsinger’s laboratory, in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department. Following this, she worked for the Korey Stringer Institute for two years as a research assistant on a project about heat stroke policies in high schools and athletic programs across the country.

During her junior year, she began a position as undergraduate researcher for Dr. Stacey Hanlon’s laboratory in the Molecular and Cell Biology department. She is completing her honors thesis in the laboratory, working with Drosophila melanogaster and evaluating B chromosomes and nondisjunction in female meiosis.

Additionally, she worked at Hartford Hospital as a Summer Pre-Med Research Intern, completing a research study under the supervision of Dr. Paul Tulikangus in the Urogynecology department.

Ayushi is passionate about undergraduate research and finding the best fit and method of research for students exploring various subjects. She is more than happy to talk about how to figure out what type and subject of research is best for you, gathering various experiences, how to approach starting research alongside taking courses, and the importance of research to pre-health students.
