Peer Research Ambassador Humza Zaidi

Peer Research Ambassador Humza Zaidi '22.

Humza (he/him/his) is a senior double majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology and Global Health and Reproduction, and is minoring in Healthcare Management and Insurance Studies within the Special Program in Medicine. In light of his strong interest in tackling structural issues, such as food insecurity, Humza founded the Restaurant Resource Project on campus. Additionally, Humza is the Vice-President of the UConn Pre-Medical Society and dances in the UConn Thunderaas team.

Humza has been heavily involved with research since his freshman year, working at Dr. Royce Mohan's lab in UConn Health Center's Department of Neuroscience. Here, Humza assessed peptidyl arginine deiminase (PAD4) expression in a laser-induced mouse model of gliosis to further understand Age-Related Macular Degeneration pathology. After presenting at UConn's Fall Frontiers and the ARVO international conference in ophthalmology, Humza is now pursuing his own independent project funded by the SURF Award that he hopes to publish in the coming year. Additionally, he is conducting an honors thesis under the supervision of Dr. Mohan.

Research is a strong passion for Humza, and at the core of his undergraduate experience. In the future, Humza would love to continue his study of medicine in a comprehensive manner — working not only in the forefront of medical research, but also applying investigative reasoning to improve upon community public health infrastructure. He would be happy to answer any questions about creating an initiative, undergraduate research, or the pre-medical track!
