Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description
| Project Description | Bone is a highly dynamic tissue and your entire skeleton is replaced every ~10 years! Using specialized animal models, we study how bone strength is maintained (including in rare diseases), how it adapts to mechanical loading and heals, and specific signalling pathways that modulate this response. The selected student will get the opportunity to use a variety of cutting-edge histology, fluorescent microscopy, microCT imaging, and/or mechanical testing techniques to address these questions. There may be opportunities to focus on certain techniques/aspects of a project depending on the candidate. |
| Project Direction | The overall goal of this research is to develop ways to prevent fractures. By studying the basic mechanisms by which bone strength is maintained and developing new treatments that can improve bone quality, you will play a part in advancing new ways to reduce fracture risk. |
| Mentorship and Supervision | Students in the lab will have the opportunity to be trained, supervised and mentored by the PI and other lab members. Students will additionally have the opportunity to learn from and interact with other lab members, graduate students and researchers in collaborating adajcent labs and in the department. Scheduled weekly meetings will discuss research findings, progress, and provide feedback. |
| Student Qualifications | The most important qualifications are being motivated as well as having a positive attitude and a genuine interest in our research! If you are interested but worried you may not have enough “experience”, please do not let that stop you from applying. We are happy to teach you the relevant skills. Although not required, please note any relevant coursework or prior laboratory experience. |
| Summer Schedule Options | HRP Research Dates: May 19 to July 25, 2025. Schedule: “Full-Time” Monday-Friday, ~8a-4:30p (some flexibility). |
