Undergraduate Research Opportunity Description

Project Description Our lab is studying heavy atom nanoparticles to enhance radiation therapy of tumors with an emphasis on brain tumor therapy. We also study the synergy of the combination of heavy atom nanoparticle radiation enhancement with other therapies such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy. We also study radiation therapy induced tumor dormancy. The student will take part in a project related to these lab interests. Topics of interest will include the relationship between the distribution of the nanoparticles and the efficacy of radiation enhancement, radiation enhancement and the efficacy of chemo- and immunotherapies, the effect of radiation dose and tumor dormancy.
Project Direction The areas of interest outlined above are topics that lend themselves to studies that will transcend a semester or two. While specific projects will be designed to yield publishable results in the time frame of a summer or semester, the broader topics will provide ongoing questions that will take years to answer.
Mentorship and Supervision Supervision and training will be provided by Dr. Smilowitz and lab personnel and or UCHC personnel with specific expertise.
Student Qualifications While prior research experience is always desirable, no specific skills are a prerequisite for a position in our lab. Training and supervision will be provided to develop requisite skills to conduct the research project.
Summer Schedule Options Research Dates: 9-10 full-time weeks to be scheduled between May 7 and August 24, 2018
